What is the difference between page format and image size?

Page size refers to the dimensions and proportions of a document or image. It determines how the document will be printed or displayed on a screen.

To better understand the different page layout options, we can open a sample document in a word processing program . Go to "File" in the menu bar and then "Page Setup" to select the paper sizes. These paper sizes correspond to the page sizes.

 

For images, the aspect ratio refers to the relationship between the width and height of the image. Common formats are 16:9, as is common in televisions and monitors, or 13:18, 10:15 or 9:13 for photo prints.

 

The aspect ratio is expressed as a ratio of two numbers such as 16:9 or 4:3. Different media require different aspect ratios to display the image optimally. It is important to choose the right aspect ratio so that the image is displayed in good quality.
 

Image size describes the dimensions of an image in pixels, or in physical measurements such as centimeters or inches. The larger the image size, the higher the resolution and therefore the quality of the image can be, both when printed and when displayed on screens.

Examples and uses:

An image that appears sharp and clear on a smartphone may appear blurry on a larger screen. This is because several factors affect image quality, such as scaling, common photo sizes for projects, color accuracy, and how the image is compressed.

Common photo sizes are often specified in pixels and are different from aspect ratios. Most smartphones use the JPEG format, which is a compressed form of image storage and requires less storage space. Professional photographers, on the other hand, prefer the RAW  format because it stores uncompressed images and thus offers higher quality and more editing options.

It is important to understand that image size has a direct impact on quality. Larger image sizes are preferable for printing or detailed editing, while smaller images are better suited for online applications where loading times are a concern.
