What is a phobia?

A phobia is a so-called "phobic disorder" or anxiety disorder.

"Phobia" comes from ancient Greek and also means fear and dread. This irrational, pathological behavior can be triggered by various objects, situations, activities, or individuals.

Phobias are more pronounced than regular fears. They develop when a person has an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger regarding a particular situation or object. When a phobia becomes severe, a person may organize their life to avoid what they fear. This not only restricts their daily life but also causes a great deal of stress.

Phobic symptoms can occur upon contact with the feared object, things, or the feared situation, or even just by thinking about the feared object. Typical symptoms associated with phobias include shortness of breath, dizziness, trembling, increased heart rate, nausea, and so on.
