Windows RETAIL, OEM or volume license?

The choice between Windows Retail, OEM or Volume License depends on your specific requirements and usage scenarios!

Contents:

1.) ... You're spoilt for choice!
2.) ... Which is the most commonly used Windows license model?

1.) The agony of choice!

- Retail

This version is intended for retail sale. It is flexible and can be installed and activated on a single computer. It is ideal for home users or small businesses that only need a limited number of licenses.

- OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

OEM versions are often pre-installed on computers sold by major manufacturers. These versions are less expensive than retail versions, but usually offer less flexibility because they are tied to the specific computer's hardware. They are best if you are buying a new computer and want the operating system pre-installed.

- Volume License

This option is intended for businesses that require a large number of licenses. Volume licenses typically offer flexibility in installing and managing software through a central management platform. They can also be more cost-effective if a large number of licenses are required.

If you are a single user or have a small business, the retail version would probably be the best option. However, if you need a large number of licenses or are purchasing an OEM system, the OEM version might be the most economical choice. For large companies with complex IT infrastructures and a large number of devices, volume licensing would probably be the best choice.

2.) What is the most commonly used Windows license model?

The most commonly used Windows licensing model depends greatly on the type of usage and user requirements. Overall, however, the OEM license is often considered the most widely used licensing model due to the large number of PCs and laptops that are sold with Windows operating systems pre-installed.

Many PC manufacturers install OEM versions of Windows on their devices, leading to widespread use of this form of license. These OEM licenses are often included in the cost of the computer and provide users with a version of Windows already pre-installed.

For businesses and organizations, especially larger companies, volume licensing models are more common. These offer flexibility and scalability to a large number of devices, which is beneficial for companies with extensive IT infrastructures.

The retail licensing model is more likely to be used by individual users or smaller companies that require a small number of licenses and want flexibility because these licenses can be activated on different computers.

Overall, the OEM licensing model is probably the most commonly used licensing model for Windows, especially when considering personal and corporate usage.
