What are proprietary file formats?

Proprietary simply means that it is not open and the company does not publish the specifications for the format!

The proprietary format is a file format of a company, an organization or a person that contains data that is ordered and stored according to a certain processing scheme!

For example the RTF was developed by Microsoft and is still owned by them. The specification is public, though it didn't take long. Microsoft may or may not have had something to do with opening the spec

This concerns patents and rights to the corresponding file format that can be claimed by the respective rights holder of the proprietary file format.

Proprietary file formats are formats whose specifications are not publicly available and whose use or implementation is controlled by the rights holder. This means that the company, organization or individual that developed the format does not publish the details and specifications of the format or makes them available only in a restricted manner.

A proprietary format is therefore a file format developed by a specific company, organization or individual whose data is structured and stored according to a specific processing scheme. The specifications are usually not freely available, which means that only the rights holder knows the exact way the data is organized in that format.

Proprietary file formats are often associated with patents and intellectual property rights that can be enforced by the respective rights holder. These rights allow the rights holder to control the use of the format and, if applicable, to collect royalties.
