What is bloatware?

Devices can come with pre-installed bloatware, which reduces performance and violates your privacy!

When you buy a new Windows PC, Android smartphone, Appels iPhone, you expect it to be clean and sleek, start up quickly and get your job done as quickly as you need it to be.

The truth is, most Windows PCs and smartphones start slower than they should be and are clogged with unnecessary pre-installed software. This software, known as bloatware, comes in many different forms. Most bloatware is not dangerous, but it can slow down your system and take up space on your hard drive or SD card.

How much is bloatware making your PC or smartphone slower?

It's hard to say, but there is some evidence that it can have a significant impact. Microsoft even sells a number of computers that are free of third-party software. According to the product page, these start up 100% faster on average, also shut down 35% faster and even have 28 minutes longer battery life than the same laptops with bloatware.

If you have bloatware on your system that cannot be easily uninstalled, or if you suspect that there is bloatware on your system that is not immediately apparent, there are a number of tools that might allow you to remove it.

The PC Decrapifier

This free application is designed to find common bloatware installed on systems. It runs as a single executable file so you can run it from a USB drive if you want. The software first needs a few minutes to analyze your system. It then categorizes what it finds into three categories: Recommended, Questionable, and Everything Else. Recommended lists software that is recommended to be uninstalled. Software for questionable lists that you may want to uninstall; Everything else lists software that there is little or no information about.
