What is exFAT formatting in Windows 10 (8.1 / 7)?

The exFAT is a file system , like FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS. The "Extended File Allocation Table" exFAT for short was developed specifically for flash storage,

but is only supported on Windows CE, Vista (SP1), Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, Server 2008-2019. There should now also be support under Linux.

►►  ...format FAT32 over 32 gigabytes?

1.) Should I use exFAT on Windows

Everyone has ever had an unformatted USB flash drive, SD cards, external, or internal hard drive and before formatting one of the above devices the Windows operating system - always asked the question in which file system you want to format your device: FAT32, NTFS or ExFAT?

Of course, most users don't know the difference between them and usually choose the option that is installed by default. Because Windows doesn't explain this question about the differences between them.

2.) ExFAT compatibility

exFAT works well with all modern versions of Windows (starting with XP) and Mac OS. To work with Linux, you need to install additional software. This file system supports many more devices than NTFS, but some (mostly older versions) can still only work with FAT32.

3.) The ExFAT limitations

As in the case of NTFS, there are currently no realistic limits on the size of the file or partition in the exFAT system.

Here are some limitations to consider when using exFAT:

1. File system integrity:

ExFAT does not provide the same level of file system integrity and error correction as NTFS. This means it may be more vulnerable to data corruption and loss, especially during sudden drive removal or power outages.

2. Compatibility with Older Operating Systems:

Although exFAT is compatible with most modern operating systems, older operating systems may not be able to read or write exFAT formatted drives. This may cause compatibility issues if you are working with older computers or devices.

3. Licensing and Patents:

ExFAT is a proprietary file system of Microsoft, meaning there may be licensing fees for implementation in other operating systems or devices. This may lead some manufacturers to prefer other file systems to save costs.

4. Fragmentation:

As with most file systems, exFAT can experience fragmentation, especially with frequent file writing and deletion. This can affect the drive's performance over time, especially with large files.

5. Security:

ExFAT does not provide built-in security features such as encryption or access controls that are available in NTFS. Therefore, it may not be the best choice for sensitive data that requires additional protection.

It is important to consider these limitations and consider individual needs and intended use of the storage device before choosing exFAT.

4.) The use of exFAT and why?

This file system is ideal for use on various removable storage devices, the size of which can exceed 4 GB (external hard drives, large volume flash drives). If all the devices you work with are up to date, you can completely delete FAT32 on removable drives in favor of exFAT.

In summary, the following conclusions can be drawn: NTFS is great for a system disk with Windows, exFAT is more suitable for use on removable storage devices, and FAT32 should only be used if you want to achieve maximum compatibility with the variety of your devices.

5.) There should also be advantages through exFAT!

But there are also supposed to be advantages through exFAT, which I couldn't recognize. I therefore advise private users to stay away from it.

You should also stick to FAT16/FAT32 for the USB stick. FAT16/FAT32 are more advantageous here because higher compatibility with other systems is guaranteed.

However, under Windows (2000, XP, VISTA, 7,...) with FAT32 you can only create a maximum size of 32 GB. This limitation can be circumvented using "Parted Magic", for example.

Here are the benefits of using exFAT:

1. Large file support:

ExFAT allows storage of single files larger than the limitations of FAT32. This is particularly useful when working with large media files, such as HD movies or large backups.

2. Large partition support:

Compared to FAT32, exFAT provides improved large partition support, meaning you can use more space on a drive without having to split it into smaller partitions.

3. Operating System Compatibility:

ExFAT is compatible with various operating systems including Windows, macOS and many Linux distributions. This makes it easier to exchange data between different devices and platforms without having to install additional drivers or software.

4. Efficient Disk Space Usage:

ExFAT offers more efficient disk space usage compared to FAT32, meaning you have less overhead from file system structures and therefore more space available for your actual data.

These advantages make exFAT an attractive option for use on removable media such as USB flash drives, SD cards and external hard drives, especially if you need to transport large files or work with large storage devices.
