What does mounted mean?


Before an operating system can read from or write to a hard disk, the file system must be mounted on one of the hard disk's partitions!


The word "mounting" comes from the field of information technology and computing and usually refers to adding an external storage device or network resource to a computer so that the computer can access the data and resources on that device or network.

1.) The term mounting!

In English, the term "mounting" is used, which can mean attachment, support, assembly, installation, suspension, socket, ...!

A "mounted" disk is available to the operating system as a file system for reading, writing, or both. However, it can refer to a group of files in a file system that can be accessed by a user or a group of users. Often it is also associated with virtual media!

Here are some common meanings of the term "mount" in different contexts:

Mount file systems: In operating systems such as Linux and Unix, "mount" is often used to mount an external storage device, such as a hard drive or USB stick, into the computer's file system integrate. This allows the files and folders on that device to be accessed as if they were part of the local file system.

Mount network drives: In corporate or home networks, “mounting” can mean connecting a network drive or share on a computer. This allows users to access files and resources stored on other computers or servers on the network.

Mounting virtual disks:In virtual environments or when working with virtual machines, “mounting” can mean mounting a virtual disk or disk image in the virtual machine to access the data it contains.

Mounting CDs or DVDs: In the past, when CDs and DVDs were widely available, "mounting" could mean configuring a computer's optical drive to access the contents of an inserted CD or DVD.

Typically, mounting resources or devices requires certain permissions and commands to ensure that they are properly integrated into the computer's file system or network.
