What is pagefile.sys?

The paging file of Windows, called pagefile.sys, is used to offload the RAM to the hard disk and other disks!

Contents:

1.) ... Pagefile.sys Understanding!
2.) ... Optimize Pagefile.sys!
3.) ... Further tips on the topic!

1.) Understand Pagefile.sys!

If the available main memory or RAM (Random Access Memory) on the Windows PC is no longer sufficient for Windows to continue to work normally, Windows uses the space on the hard drive.

So, Windows simulates the required RAM in Pagefile.sys.

The RAM simulated in the swap file is also often referred to as virtual RAM . In Linux this file is called a swap file.

After installing Windows, this  virtual memory , located in the page file, is reserved and is 1 to 2 times larger than the actual random access memory (RAM).

2.) Optimize Pagefile.sys!

To optimize virtual memory, you can distribute the storage space across multiple drives,
but this will only be successful if it is also a separate physical drive. It's even better if it's an SSD drive. Because slower drives do not help optimize  virtual RAM , they actually slow it down!

So, distribution across as many physical and fast hard drives as possible leads to success.

You should also avoid using multiple swap files in different partitions on the same physical drive, as this leads to parallel access and has a negative effect.
I already wrote something here: ... improve file operations on the system, but how!

3.) More tips on the topic!

Optimizing the swap file can be very advantageous in some cases, especially if the hard drives are not very fast. With the new M2 SSD hard drives it is not so important because they achieve rapid speeds.

The operating system itself also has built-in brakes or poorly written software that slows down the system. A well-configured system in 2000 would sometimes be faster than a poorly configured system in 2022.
