My external USB hard drive doesn't work on the USB HUB, why?

Yes, I am aware of the problem with the hard drive on the USB HUB, it is due to the limitations of the USB technology and the cable length.

The following things should be observed!
A hard drive and two to four other USB sticks can be connected to a HUB with a short cable (30 centimeters)!

With longer cables, connecting a hard disk only works if it has its own power supply, i.e. its own power supply unit!

Or:   You have a USB HUB that also has its own power supply!

Here are the amazon.de links to see the pictures:

PS: We also speak of passive and active USB HUB

Contents:

1.) ... A little information about USB-HUB and how it works!
2.) ... What should I consider when buying an active USB HUB?

1.) A little information about USB-HUB and how it works!

The USB HUB has an integrated chip that enables multiple devices to be connected to one port; it should be noted that the individual devices also share the maximum transfer rate to the PC.
The passive hub uses the power supply from the PC and the active USB HUB has its own power supply via a power supply unit. Some can be operated as an active or passive hub.

A USB hub is a device that allows multiple USB devices to be connected to a single USB port on a computer. It practically expands the number of USB ports available. Here is some important information and how USB hubs work:

1. Number of Ports:

USB hubs come in different styles with different numbers of ports, from a few to several dozen.

2. Power Supply:

There are two types of USB hubs: passive and active. Passive hubs draw their power exclusively from the computer's USB port. Active hubs have their own power supply and can therefore provide more energy to power multiple devices.

3. Transfer Speed:

The transfer speed of a USB hub depends on the USB version it supports. USB 2.0 hubs have a maximum transfer speed of 480 Mbit/s, while USB 3.0 hubs offer a much higher speed of up to 5 Gbit/s.

4. Cascading:

Some USB hubs support cascading, which means you can connect multiple hubs together to connect even more USB devices. This can be useful if you have many devices but only a limited number of USB ports on your computer.

5. Plug and Play:

USB hubs are typically plug and play devices, meaning they can be easily connected without requiring additional driver installations. The computer automatically detects the hub and connected devices once it is connected.

6. Compatibility:

USB hubs are compatible with most modern operating systems including Windows, macOS and Linux. They can support a variety of USB devices including keyboards, mice, printers, external hard drives, USB flash drives and more.

By considering this information, you can choose the most suitable USB hub for your needs and use it effectively to connect and manage your USB devices.

2.) What should I consider when buying an active USB HUB?

Actually the most important point is that the power supply is correct, especially with a fast USB 3 this also has an influence on the speed. Add the number of watts of devices to be connected to the hub, the power supply should be a little higher than the wattage of all USB devices!

When purchasing an active USB hub, there are a few important points to consider to ensure it meets your needs and performs reliably:

1. Number of Ports:

Make sure the USB hub has enough ports to connect all your USB devices. Also consider whether you might want to add additional devices in the future.

2. Transfer Speed:

If you use many high-speed USB devices, such as external hard drives or SSDs, choose a hub with USB 3.0 or higher to ensure the best possible transfer speed.

3. Power Supply:

Check whether the USB hub has its own power supply. This is especially important when connecting devices that require a lot of power, such as external hard drives. An active, self-powered hub can provide enough energy to properly operate all connected devices.

4. Quality and Brand:

Look for reputable brands and high-quality products. Cheap USB hubs may not provide the performance and reliability you need and could even damage the connected devices.

5. Additional Features:

Some USB hubs offer additional features such as fast charging ports for mobile devices, built-in card readers, or Ethernet ports. Consider whether these features are useful to you and whether the hub offers them.

6. Placement and Design:

Consider the placement of the hub and its design. A compact and lightweight design can improve mobility, while a hub with non-slip foot pads ensures stable positioning.

7. Compatibility:

Make sure the USB hub is compatible with your operating system and the USB devices you are using. Most USB hubs are compatible with popular operating systems such as Windows, macOS and Linux, but it's still important to check.

By considering these points, you can ensure that the active USB hub you choose meets your needs and provides you with reliable connection and power for your USB devices.
