How big is Windows 12 on the hard drive, DVD, installation!?
The exact size of Windows 12 on the hard drive or an installation DVD depends on various factors, such as the edition (e.g. Home, Pro, Enterprise) and the additional components installed. Based on previous reports and experience with previous Windows versions such as Windows 11, here are some guidelines:
1.) Windows 12 installation size on the hard drive:
1. After installation :
- Windows 12 is expected to require 20 to 25 GB of hard drive space (for the operating system alone).
- After updates and installing additional apps or features, the space requirement may grow to 30 to 40 GB or more.
2. With optional features :
- Features such as virtualization (Hyper-V), language packs or other extensions may take up an additional 5 to 10 GB .
2.) Size of Windows 12 installation files (ISO / DVD):
1. ISO or USB installation media :
- The ISO image of Windows 12 will be around 4 to 5 GB in size, similar to Windows 11.
- USB sticks or DVDs for installation require at least 8 GB of space .
2. DVD size :
- For a DVD (dual layer), 4.7 GB or more is sufficient, depending on the drivers and optional tools provided.
3.) Additional storage space required during installation:
- Windows requires additional free space for temporary files during installation. There should be at least 10 to 15 GB of free space on the hard disk, although the system may need less space later.
4.) Preparation before installation
1. Create a backup :
- Back up your important files, programs and settings, as reinstalling Windows often deletes all data on the hard drive.
- Use external hard drives, USB sticks or cloud storage for backup.
2. Check system requirements :
- Make sure your PC meets the minimum requirements of Windows 12 :
- Processor: At least 1 GHz with 2 or more cores, 64-bit compatible.
- RAM: At least 4 GB (8 GB is better for smooth use).
- Hard drive/SSD: At least 64 GB of free space.
- TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot: Check if your device meets these requirements.
3. Create installation media :
- Download the Windows 12 ISO file from the official Microsoft website.
- Create a USB boot media (at least 8 GB in size) using tools like the Windows Media Creation Tool or programs like Rufus.
4. Prepare drivers :
- Download important drivers (e.g. for graphics, WiFi, network) in advance from your device manufacturer's website. Save them on a USB stick for emergency use.
5.) During installation
1. Boot from USB stick :
- Start the PC and press the appropriate key (e.g. F12 , ESC , DEL , F2 ) during the startup process to enter the boot menu
. - Select the USB boot medium to start the installation.
2. Manage partitions :
- Delete old system partitions if you want to do a clean install .
- Create a new partition for Windows (at least 64 GB in size). For optimal performance, we recommend a separate partition for data.
3. Disable internet connection(optional) :
- If you don't want to use online Microsoft accounts, temporarily disconnect your internet connection to create a local user account
. 4. Enter product key : - Enter your Windows 12 product key
during installation if required. You can also skip this step and activate the key later.
6.) After installation
1. Perform Windows Updates :
- Immediately after installation, perform Windows Updates to update security patches and drivers.
- To do this, open `Settings > Update & Security > Check for updates`.
2. Install drivers :
- Install the previously downloaded drivers for hardware such as graphics, audio and Wi-Fi.
- Check in Device Manager if all devices are correctly recognized.
3. Clean up disk space :
- Delete old installation files or temporary data using the Disk Cleanup tool (`cleanmgr`).
4. Install useful software :
- Install programs that you use frequently such as browsers, office applications, antivirus software and tools.
5. Create a restore point :
- After installing all programs, create a restore point to quickly return to a stable state in case of problems.
- Steps :
Open `Control Panel > System > System Protection > Create`.
