Microsoft is preparing for the release of Windows 12. These speculations were based on Microsoft's traditional three-year cycle for major versions, which was already used for Windows 7 and 8. After the release of Windows 11 in October 2021, it would have been only logical that Windows 12 would follow three years later. However, a surprise came at the end of May 2024: Microsoft presented the new device class Copilot+PC and at the same time unveiled Windows 11 version 24H2, also known by the code name "Germanium". This version of Windows 11 brings new AI features such as the controversial reminder tool Recall. The move to further develop Windows 11 could be justified by the fact that Microsoft will not stop supporting Windows 10 until October 14, 2025. This would mean that Microsoft would have to provide updates and support for three major Windows versions at the same time by this time.
