Standby or sleep mode under Windows (11, 10, 8.1, 7)?

Everyone has asked the question, standby, or sleep mode under Windows (11, 10, 8.1), or what is the difference between standby and hibernation ?!

Windows Standby Mode

Standby mode temporarily pauses the computer. The system is switched to economic operating mode, the monitor is switched off, hard drives are paused, thus reducing energy consumption and that of other components of the Windows computer. All current data is stored in the main memory (RAM). Waking up the PC from standby mode is easy by pressing any key or by moving the mouse, depending on the BIOS setting.

This mode is more suitable for laptops than for desktops. Also keep in mind that if you switch to standby mode, all programs will stop running. So if the programs are connected to the internet and exchanging data, this is probably not the best option.

Windows  Sleep Mode

When you switch to sleep mode, the computer turns off completely. However, the current state of the system consists only of running programs, open documents, etc. This means that the entire content of the main memory is saved on the hard disk.

The next time you turn on the computer, the operating system will not initialize but will be restored to its state before it goes to sleep. And you can pick up right away from where the break was taken.

The sleep mode is also called "hibernation".
