1. Is this perhaps an unofficial test version of Azure Windows 12?
2. And a Windows 12 development environment and what is currently possible?

1.) Is this perhaps an unofficial test version of Azure Windows 12?

There is currently no official version of Windows 12. Microsoft has not made any announcements regarding such an operating system so far. It is possible that the information you have received is misunderstanding or rumors. Please note that unofficial or unauthorized downloads of operating systems may carry risks such as malware or instability. For up-to-date information on Windows versions and official downloads, it is recommended to consult the official Microsoft website.

However, there are rumors and speculations about the next version of Windows, which may be called Windows 12. Some sources suggest that this version could arrive in late 2024 or early 2025. However, there is currently no official test version available. It is important to wait for official announcements from Microsoft and not to download unofficial versions as they may carry risks.

For developers, Microsoft offers virtual machines with the latest versions of Windows and developer tools that can be downloaded from the official website, but these are limited to the current official versions.

For more information and latest updates, it is recommended to follow Microsoft's official channels.

Here is a video that offers a first look at Windows 12:

2.) And a Windows 12 development environment, and what is currently possible?

Microsoft often offers ready-made development environments for developers, such as virtual machines or dedicated tools to work with upcoming technologies. However, officially there is currently no specific development environment for Windows 12 , as the release of Windows 12 has not been confirmed yet. There is also no official test or preview version.

What is currently possible:

1. Virtual machines :

Microsoft regularly provides VMs for developers with current versions of Windows 11 that can be used for software testing, web development, and app development. However, these are limited to the currently stable versions of Windows.

2. Windows Insider Program :

Developers can join the Windows Insider Program to test pre-release versions of Windows (Beta or Dev Channel). If Windows 12 is ever available as an Insider Preview, this would be the first port of call.

3. Azure-based development environments : If you want to use an environment with Windows, you can deploy Windows virtual machines

through Microsoft Azure . These are customizable and can be configured with developer tools. However, they currently only offer officially supported versions such as Windows 10 and 11.

4. Microsoft Dev Box :

The Microsoft Dev Box offers pre-configured development environments for teams working in the cloud. If Windows 12 becomes available to developers, the Dev Box could be one of the supported tools.

Conclusion:

A dedicated Windows 12 development environment is not currently available . As soon as Microsoft makes announcements about Windows 12, preview versions will most likely be released first through the Windows Insider Program or through Azure VMs . It's worth keeping an eye on the official Microsoft channels.
